The Threats That Severe Thunderstorms Pose | SERVPRO of South Atlanta

heavy rain coming out of stormy clouds Thunderstorms can pop up at any moment. Call SERVPRO of South Atlanta if you experience any storm or water damage. We're here to help 24-hours a day!

Throughout Atlanta, we are used to thunderstorms rolling through regularly during the warmer months, but their frequency does not mean that their dangers should be discounted. While we all hope that every storm will pass without incident, the reality is that they can cause severe damage to people and their property.

Thunder and lightning are the basic prerequisites for any thunderstorm, and you can’t have one without the other. A storm will be upgraded to severe if the winds are blowing at over 58 miles per hour and the hail is over an inch in diameter, making the threat even more imminent.

Damage and injury from lightning strikes. Thunder and lightning are always linked together—it is impossible to have one without the other, even if you do not see lightning or hear rumbles. Lightning causes over 300 injuries every year to people, and it can also cause serious property damages by starting fires and felling trees on homes, businesses or vehicles.

Property damage due to hail. Hail is a tricky atmospheric condition, but every thunderstorm has the potential to produce it and every severe thunderstorm is actively producing it in larger sizes. Not only is hail dangerous for those that are caught outside and off guard by the thunderstorm, but it can also fall at over 100 miles per hour, damaging structures, roofs, cars and more. Even small hail can be serious, but larger sizes such as those associated with severe thunderstorms can be extremely dangerous.

Harm from flash flooding. Though flooding is often associated with waterways, flash floods can occur for a variety of reasons during heavy rain. Storm drain backups and overwhelmed tributaries are extremely common, meaning that nearly anywhere can flood if the conditions are right. Floodwaters can knock people off their feet, carry away cars and cause significant injuries or death, so stay far away from any area that has rising water.

Thunderstorms are dangerous and can cause significant damage to homes or commercial spaces. If you have damage due to a thunderstorm, you can count on us to help. Contact us 247 for more information about our storm restoration practices.
