“Walking in a Winter Wonderland” might be playing on the radio, but it’s unusual to see it actually impacting our area this time of year. States to our north frequently see bitter cold and wintry precipitation by the time December rolls around, making it essential to prepare ahead to weather the storm, so to speak.

But even here in the south, it’s important to take steps to ensure your family and your house stay safe and secure as colder weather sets in. Start with these tips:

- Service Your HVAC - Even if we don’t hit below-freezing temperatures, we certainly turn on the heat! (We don’t know about you, but we already have.) If you haven’t had the HVAC unit inspected in a while, it’s a good idea to have a maintenance check performed. This can help ensure the unit runs properly and efficiently, while also ensuring it’s not a fire hazard.

- Make Time for Roof, Gutter and Chimney Maintenance - While it can get downright chilly here, it’s not often that we see snow. Rain falls throughout the year here meaning that Mother Nature is always catching us by surprise. Because we aren’t ever sure of what the weather is going to do, it’s important that you always stay prepared for any type of weather. Inspect your gutters and ensure they are free of debris. Check your roof missing shingles or damaged flashing to help protect your home from any leaks.

- Insulate and Seal - By insulating your attic and getting a good seal on your windows, you can help prevent cold coming into your home. Another added benefit is it can help you save on your electric bill.

- Maintain Your Vehicle - Just like your home, you vehicle needs to be a safe place, too. Make sure you have new windshield wipers, that your tires are in good condition and that your battery is charged. It’s also a good idea to always keep an emergency safety kit in your vehicle.

If winter weather or unexpected flooding causes water to damage your home, we’re always here to help. Contact SERVPRO of South Atlanta to see how quick and easy it is to let the pros handle your cleanup and recovery.
